HHR Urban GOP Profile: Dave Hedgepeth - Candidate For Ward 3 DC Council

ABOUT THE CANDIDATE

Dave resides in the North Cleveland Park/Forest Hills area of Ward 3 with his wife Justine Kenin who is a producer at National Public Radio (NPR), and his twin daughters Annie and Veda who attend Murch Elementary School.

Dave was raised in Co-op City, the Bronx: a middle income community of 50,000 residents, and the largest single residential development in the United States. A “city within a city”, it was a great place to grow up, and Dave is a proud graduate of its Public Schools: P.S. 160, I.S. 180 and Harry S. Truman H.S.

Dave received his BA in History from Colgate University where he was active in Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and received his JD from the Catholic University of America (CUA), Columbus School of Law. At Catholic, Dave pursued his interests in labor law and education issues as a law clerk for the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Dave was also proud to help DC special education students as a student lawyer at CUA’s Families and the Law Clinic, where he helped kids receive the free appropriate public education (FAPE) they were entitled to under the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act (IDEA). Since graduation Dave has used his education to take on issues of great importance to him as a Litigation Support Specialist managing paralegal, administrative and technical teams on cases such as discrimination against African American and Latino farmers, and protecting third party payers such as CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield from unfair business practices by Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs).

Having two children in the DCPS system, Dave’s top priority will be education reform and supporting the efforts of Chancellor Michelle Rhee to improve DC schools by demanding greater accountability, promoting higher standards and expanding educational opportunities for parents and kids thorough charter schools. Dave will also focus on strengthening our public transportation system, and making DC more affordable and business friendly.

Dave enjoys spending his free time with his family and doing activities such as going to the Wilson pool and enjoying many of the great parks available in Ward 3. He is also a lifelong Yankees fan, and recent Nationals fan, and enjoys following his teams through the long baseball season and getting out to games when he can.
