Colin Powell to endorse Obama

by Richard Ivory

CNN and the Politico are reporting that in a few days possibly on Sunday's Meet the Press Colin Powell may endorse Sen. Barack Obama. A Colin Powell endorsement will be a huge punch in the face to the GOP. If he does endorse Obama it will be a well deserved punch that party leaders should take seriously. This should force the Republican Party to rethink its stand on many issues but particularly its stands on race and urban development . If the leaders of the party continue on a path of indifference, and Obama wins the GOP could potentially lose every major election.

Every major demographics poll show that the nation is changing and in more ways than not. Despite these trends our party remains virtually the same as a result the party is loosing elections. The demographic shifts in the nation show for instance that Latinos a ounce sought after constituency in our party are now heavily backing Democrats. The anti immigrant fervor coming from some segments of the base of the party is leading this party to its death The ostrich with his head in the sand approach to outreach is a recipe for disaster. If the GOP fails to sincerely reach out to the nations, minorities and urban cities it will return to its 20th century status under Franklin D. Roosevelt. The leadership of the GOP is old and out of touch with its base and is leading this party down a path of no return. For those who would like to dismiss Powell’s potential endorsement just remember who Powell is. Is it possible that Powell is trying to say something to the leadership of the party. Will the leaders of the party listen or ignore the concerns?

~During the Vietnam War, Powell was a captain, serving as a South Vietnamese Army adviser from 1962 to 1963. While on patrol in a Viet Cong-held area, he was wounded after stepping on a punji stake trap. He returned to Vietnam as a major from 1968 to 1970, where he first served as the executive officer for the Americal Division (23rd Infantry Division), then as the assistant chief of staff of operations for the Americal Division.

I definitely agree with you. If the GOP misses this opportunity to address the concerns of moderate (especially black and Latino) republicans, this party will never become a majority party in an ever increasingly diverse and dynamic society.

I hope that former Secretary Powell will follow his campaign endorsement and support McCain IN SPITE of the present GOP leadership.

The GOP missed a softball when Bush handed them an immigration deal that would have sealed Hispanic support for decades. I hope Sen. McCain can pull this out and fundamentally change a party that is suddenly becoming the minority party.

So what? It was Powell who helped W drag us into Iraq, a war many of you don't like. I think his promotion of Obama is Powell's way of seeking penance for the war. What happens if Obama turns into a tanned Carter? The media cannot spin higher unemployment and if Iran gets the bomb.

I'm sure that the "Black Elite" like Oprah and others are putting pressure on Coin Powell to endorse Obama. That's always what's behind these endorsements. But I think it would be a mistake, because it was Powell himself who was supporting the War in Iraq.
I'm Hispanic and Republican.

So now that Powell has endorsed Obama? What's your take?

I'm not surprised at all, and I was proud of Powell for calling on Republicans to take a good hard look at the party structure. If you really listen to his speeches (the transcripts are available on line) he makes a very strong and compelling case for his support and for why he could not support McCain.

What disgusts me is Rush Limbaugh who immediately made the endorsement about race. Powell endorses Obama and Limbaugh says he endorsed him because he's black? And supporters are taking up that claim? Gross.

However, I do think the McCain campaign is approaching the Powell endorsement in a graceful manner, so I applaud them for that. But still, people like Rush Limbaugh (and Michelle Malkin) really cheapen the party and what it stands for when they attack in vicious and ugly ways.

I was also wondering - it'd be a great for you guys to do a post on what inclusivity means to you... and the idea of two-party competition... also, your take on the Republican Party... pros? cons? Things that need to be changed? Things that should stay the same?

To EVERYONE!!!! Read the two comments made by the "anonymous" white person. THIS IS WHAT THEY THINK OF YOU!!! Its black people like THIS that allowed them to STEAL the 2000 election. Its this so called "progressive" blacks that allowed DUMBO the FOOL to stay in office yet another 4 years. If we as blacks would just FINALLY come together, we have enough power to ensure that our needs are met. The power to help turn around our communities, our schools, our homes. THIS is whats wrong with our community. THIS is whats wrong with our generation. There are FAR too many african americans that are to concerned with being accepted by a race and society of people that has TRADITIONALLY spit in our faces. When we are litterally looking at the fullfillment of Martin's dream, we STILL have black people that are trying their BEST to get into the "house" of Stephen. It shames me to know that more than 60% of the people that are for change, people that are in FULL support of Obama are WHITE. It shames me but I am NOT surprised. It just makes me sick to my stomach. We constantly sell ourselves out for the acceptance of white america when they dont give a *&!@^ about us. All they want is your vote to get McCain back into the white house and you fools are falling for it YET AGAIN!!! It really does shock me that in spite of EVERYTHING that has happened in the past 8 years, that I even have to HAVE this conversation. They could care LESS about what you think or about anything that they suckered you into believing. (ie affirmative action, ect). Tomorrow will go down in history as one of the most important days in the history of this world.

AND YOU IDIOTS have the GAUL create a website like THIS. THEY ARE LAUGHING AT US!!!! Any minority (or anyone for that matter) that makes less than $250,000 anually has NO BUSINESS IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!! And if you ARE above that range in your salary, you STILL get a slap from me b/c you are doing NOTHING to reach back into our communities.

THIS IS WHY OUR YOUTH ARE SO LOST.

Look at the COONS that are leading them STRAIGHT into the devils den.

YOU ALL MAKE ME SICK!!!!!

OBAMA OR BUST!!!!!!!!!
