If he had visited King in 1960, he might not have gotten a bad reputation.
His Watergate recordings showed a darker side of him. I don't know why, he was a Quaker a group that believes in equality for all people. But he listened to the GOP bosses on how to win the South and he listened.
Hope he repented before he died.

~It is one of great ironies of U.S. political mythology that the Kennedy family, viewed today as the very symbol of liberalism, was, in fact, deeply conservative. Joe Kennedy was very close to the infamous anti-Communist Sen. Joseph McCarthy after he became famous for tormenting liberals and radicals during the 1950s witch-hunts.
Come on. Every one knows that the Republican and Democratic parties of the 1950s died under Johnson and Nixon.
The Dixiecrats jumped ship and joined the Republicans en masse as Nixon adopted the Southern Strategy to win votes.
In contrast, it was Lyndon Johnson, a Democrat, a contingent of liberal Republicans, and liberal Demos who got the massive Civil Rights packages passed. After those victories in the 1960s.
And, again, Nixon's tapes reveal him to be an awful racist. Not as bad as some but pretty terrible.

You do realize a good chunk of those folks switched party affiliations between 1964-1976 right?
And sure, Kennedy was a conservative, and LBJ was a racist, just listen to his tapes. Nixon was prone to tossing around the N-bomb too. Politicians are flawed people who put themselves on a stage for the world to see.
The real question is, who actually gets things done. LBJ may have been a closet racist, but he still railroaded the 1964 Civil Rights Act (yes, with the help of the GOP) through Congress and signed it into law.
Goldwater claimed to be morally all about Civil Rights... but when it came down to it, the GOP candidate of '64 didn't support the CRA of 1964, and ran on a pro-states' rights campaign which opened the door for segregationist Democrats to run willy nilly all over the party. It was devastating to the GOP... they completely lost the black vote, lost most of the Jewish vote, and most of the Catholic vote. They did gain some votes though... all of the deep south states which have been red states ever since.

A good chunk not even most of these guys the majority of them stayed Democrats! Be more specific why don't you show who changed parties and who stayed I will be waiting????
As you can see most Dixiecrats remained Democrats the only notable person was Strom Thurmond. The reason why the left focuses on Strom is that he was one of the only ones to switch the rest STAYED DEMOCRAT!

New York moderate Nelson Rockefeller's defeat in the presidential primary election marked the beginning of the end of moderates and liberals in the Republican Party.
Clearer political and ideological lines began to be drawn between the Democrat and Republican parties as moderates and liberals converted from Republican to Democrat. Conservatives in the Democratic Party began to move to the increasingly conservative Republican Party.
Meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, the Dixiecrats nominated South Carolina governor Strom Thurmond as their presidential candidate, and Mississippi governor Field J. Wright, as their vice-presidential nominee. The party platform represented the openly racist views of most white southerners of the time. It opposed abolition of the poll tax while endorsing segregation and the "racial integrity" of each race. In the November election, Thurmond carried the states of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina. Although Thurmond did not win the election, he received well over a million popular votes and 39 electoral votes.

By 1952, southern Democrats had concluded that they could exercise more influence through the Democratic Party and therefore returned to the fold. They remained in the Democratic fold, restive, until the candidacy of Republican conservative Barry Goldwater liberated them in 1964 by refreshing some of the Dixiecrat ideologies and therefore accelerated the transition from a solid South for the Democrats to one for the Republicans. Strom Thurmond switched to the Republican Party that year and remained there until his death in December 2003.
Come on...Why don't you pick up a history book. Democrats like to spread the myth that the Dixiecrat s all became Republican this is a lie.The South did not even become Republican until the late 80's. In fact most of the South remained conservative Democrat this the rise of Bill Clinton. It is a shame that the GOP allow Democrats to spread such vicious lies. The Republican party changed primarily because of economic reasons in the 80's not racial reasons.
