Not About Race

Senator Barack Obama isn't the first Black-American to run for America's highest political office. There was…Shirley Chisholm, Member of Congress from New York's 12th District, was the first woman and the first African-American to seek the nomination of the Democratic Party for the nation's highest office in 1972.Jesse Jackson Sr., a civil rights activist, was a candidate for the Democratic nomination in 1984 and 1988.Alan Keyes, a conservative political activist and former diplomat (under President Ronald Reagan), was most recently an Independent candidate in 2008 but also ran in 1996 and 2000.Al Sharpton Jr., a political and civil rights activist, was a candidate for the Democratic nomination in 2000. So let's not assume that people are voted into positions based on their race (America's race relations is a separate issue). So why are folks assuming that every African-American voter is a Senator Obama supporter? If this was the case, why didn't the above-mentioned individuals get elected?
